Simple steps for getting braces put


Initial Orthodontic Consultation, dental examination & oral prophylaxis

Two X-rays are required to check the position of the teeth & to evaluate the relation of the soft tissues to the bony landmarks according to which the most suitable treatment is advised. Some extractions may be needed to ensure the final perfect alignment. Full mouth examination and oral prophylaxis will be performed for the patient after formulating the final treatment plan.

  • Use an orthodontic toothbrush to navigate the braces and to make teeth cleaning easier, Use an interdental toothbrush between the teeth gaps to remove any food that is stuck. Floss & brush twice with a fluoride toothpaste.
  • Depending on the severity of the case, orthodontic treatment usually lasts from eight months up to thirty months.
  • After placing the braces, it is normal to feel slight discomfort and pain as the surrounding soft tissues such as the cheeks, tongue and the lips take time to adapt to them. The teeth feel sore during the first few days.
  • It is advised to avoid any hard foodstuffs till the soreness disappears. Over the counter painkillers may also be taken if the pain is unbearable
  • It is extremely important to keep the retainer clean. The patient is advised to gently brush the retainer with a toothbrush and a nonabrasive toothpaste to remove any debris. Remove the retainer during meals and keep it in a safe box. Do not keep in boiling water or the dishwasher
  • The retainer should be worn throughout the length of the duration as advised by the orthodontist so as to prevent relapse of the treatment
  • Removable Hawley’s retainer, which has an acrylic base that rests on the palate and a wire against the teeth . Removable clear retainers that’s are completely transparent and in the form of plastic trays, which fit directly onto the tooth surface & also help with bruxism . Fixed lingual retainers that are directly bonded to the back side of the tooth surface with the help of composite material.
  • The different types of braces are traditional metal braces, self-ligating braces, ceramic braces, lingual braces are clear aligners.
  • These are the most popular and widely available option. In this case, both the wire and the bracket attached to the tooth are metallic in nature. The arch wire is held in place with the help of tiny elastics
  • Self-ligating braces may be either metallic or clear. The arch wire is held in place with the help of specialized clips in contrast to traditional metal braces which uses elastics. The main advantage of self-ligating braces is that it reduces friction & the treatment duration.
  • In this case, the ceramic bracket bonded to the tooth is transparent and the arch wire is metallic. They function in a similar manner to the traditional metal braces. The advantage is the aesthetic appeal of these braces making it a preferred option for adults and older teenagers.
  • In this system, the braces are attached to the back side of the teeth in the upper and the lower arches. It may provide discomfort to the patient and also increase the treatment duration. The only advantage is that there will be no visibility of the braces.
  • These are completely transparent trays which are customized and fit directly onto the teeth. The main advantage is that they can be removed any time, allowing the patient to eat properly as well as take good care of their oral health.
