Summary:
Tooth sensitivity occurs due to an exposure of the nerve endings, either because of the erosion of the tooth enamel, or the surrounding unhealthy gum and tissues. An excessive deposition of plaque causes tooth enamel to wear away. So your teeth become more sensitive as they lose protection provided by the enamel. To overcome this, practicing daily oral hygiene methods and regular visit to a dentist is necessary.
Tooth sensitivity refers to tooth discomfort or pain in one or more teeth. The pain is usually sharp, sudden and shooting.
Tooth sensitivity occurs when the layer of a tooth underneath the enamel (called the dentin) or the layer covering the root (called cementum) is exposed along the gum-line due to receding gums.
The nerve endings connect to the main nerve or the pulp of the tooth. The exposed areas respond to hot and cold, and sometimes too sweet and spicy foods, and trigger a jolting pain or worsen an already-existing problem.
The discomfort maybe caused by other factors, such as cavity, cracked or chipped tooth, worn filling, or gum disease. It may be temporary or a chronic problem, affecting one tooth, many teeth, or all the teeth.
Experiencing pain when brushing or flossing may lead to poor dental hygiene. This can trigger further dental problems such as gum disease and cavities.
Most cases of sensitive teeth are easily treated with a change in oral hygiene practices.
